Description
. Basic Description & Purpose
-
The left front headlight (also called left-hand headlamp or driver’s side in LHD markets) is part of the vehicle’s front lighting system.
-
It houses the low beam, high beam, position/parking light, turn signal (indicator), and sometimes daytime running lights (DRL) or additional LED strips, depending on trim.
-
It must be sealed to protect against water, dust, shock, and temperature changes, while precisely directing the beam pattern to meet legal requirements.
2. Compatibility & Fitment
To ensure the headlight fits and works correctly:
| Parameter | Typical Specification / Consideration |
|---|---|
| Model & Year | Must match the BYD Song L variant (EV, DM-i, or trim) |
| Mounting points | Same bracket points, bolt positions, and alignment features as original |
| Electrical connector | Same pin-out, connector type, voltage (usually 12 V in vehicle circuits) |
| Lens curvature & optics | Must align with vehicle’s front fascia to avoid interference |
| Beam orientation | Left-hand pattern (for the left side) in LHD markets; mirror if RHD market |
3. Construction & Materials
-
Housing material: Usually durable plastics like polycarbonate or ABS with UV-resistant treatment.
-
Lens: Clear polycarbonate (often coated for scratch / UV resistance).
-
Reflectors / optics: Precision aluminum or metallized reflectors, or projector modules for certain trims.
-
Seals & gaskets: Rubber seals (e.g. silicone) around the edge and venting (breather valves) to prevent condensation.
-
Internal mounting / adjustment mechanism: Screws or motors to adjust vertical (and sometimes horizontal) aim.
-
Internal components: LED modules, bulbs (H7, H11, etc.), DRL strips, signal lamps, wiring, internal heat sinks, circuitry.
4. Electrical & Optical Specifications
Here are key parameters to verify or specify:
| Specification | Value / Target | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| Supply voltage | 12 V (or vehicle’s lighting circuit) | Most car lighting circuits run 12 V |
| Power rating | (varies) | Depends on the number of LEDs, modules; some high-spec units may draw more |
| Luminous flux | (varies) | Should meet or exceed original OEM spec |
| Color temperature | ~ 5,000 K to 6,500 K for LEDs | Closer to daylight white for good visibility |
| Beam pattern & cutoff | Compliant with local regulations (e.g. ECE R112, SAE, etc.) | To avoid dazzling oncoming traffic |
| Waterproofing / Ingress protection | e.g. IP65, IP66 or IP67 | To withstand rain, dust, etc. |
| Thermal management | Heat sinks, thermal paths | Especially for LED headlamps to avoid overheating |
5. Optional / Advanced Features
Depending on the trim and market, a headlamp assembly may include:
-
Adaptive front lighting system (AFS): aims the beam when cornering
-
Automatic level adjust (self-leveling)
-
LED matrix or dynamic beam (cutting out sections of high beam)
-
Integrated DRL strips or light signatures
-
Sequential turn signals
-
Cornering lights
-
Day/night sensor / auto on-off
-
Lens coating (anti-fog, anti-scratch)
Note: the spec sheet for the BYD Song L indicates that “headlight height adjustment” is standard.
